Abstract
In order to understanding geochemical characteristics in intertidal flat, surface sediments samples were collected from a tidal flat located in Daebu, Oi and Ganghwa Island, west coast of Korea in October 2004. Added, try to obtain the basic information on the self-purification ability of tidal flat, sediments incubation experiment were conducted for 36~48 hours. Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD) in the surface sediments ranged from 2.66 to 12.23mg/g, total organic carbon contents ranged from 0.19 to 0.83%, total sulfur contents ranged from 0.05 to 0.13%, total nitrogen contents ranged from 0.03 to 0.08%, and total phosphorus ranged from 411.3 to 467.7ug/g. Daebu and Ganghwa Island sediment geochemical factors were relatively high to Oi Island’s geochemical factors. According to sediment incubation experiments, almost organic and inorganic elements decrease generally with time, but ammonia (NH4+) was increased with time. These elements controlled by biogeochemical cycling at the sediment-water interface. The exchange flux across the sediment-water interface showed a sink of phosphorus, COD and nitrate, but ammonia showed diffusive flux as a source.
