The Marine Environmental and Climate Research Division conducts research to understand and predict marine environment and climate changes and how these pressures affect marine ecosystems. Establishing ocean observation systems and developing numerical modeling techniques are essential for climate research. Environmental studies target biogeochemical processes in the marginal seas and open ocean as well as pollution issues resulting from eutrophication and radionuclides. Through these studies fused by physical, chemical, geological and biological experts and focusing on understanding ecosystem structure and responseto climate and environmental change, the Division plays a fundamental role in KIOST’s ocean science and technical development.

해양환경·기후연구본부에서는 해양환경과 기후변화를 진단·예측하고 해양생태계에 미치는 영향을 연구하고 있다. 기후변화의 감시를 위해 해양관측망을 구축하고 수치모형 기술개발에 주력하고 있으며, 부영양화와 방사능과 같은 인위적 오염의 영향과 한반도 주변해와 대양에서 물질순환의 변화를 연구하고 있다. 궁극적으로 기후와 환경 압력에 따른 해양생태계의 구조와 기능의 변화를 이해하기 위해 물리, 화학, 지질, 생물의 전문성을 융합하여 우리원의 해양과학기술 개발의 초석을 다지고 있다.
