Abstract
Manganese nodules have been collected in the Pacific Ocean and considerably developed because of their availability in industry. The nodules are enriched in useful resources, however, they contain harmful heavy metals to marine environmentincluding marine life. With this trend, International organizations will set up international environmental guidelines for the sustainable development of deep-sea resources until 2020s. Therefore, there are extremely needed to develop remediation technologies as soon as possible. This study suggests the remediation of heavy metals in manganese nodules using alginate which is classified biopolymer. Alginate is used to remediation methods recently, because of its nontoxic and biodegradable properties. In this study, the result of using alginate has tendency to increase copper(Cu) concentration as time passed. Therefore, this research shows that using alginate could extract heavy metals from manganese nodules with elapsed time. Besides, this research could be a basis data for the remediation technologies of heavy metals in manganese nodules.
