Abstract
◎ Background (or Objective) of This Study : The genus Osopsaron Jordan and Starks, 1904, comprising five valid species worldwide belongs to subfamily Hemercoetinae of percophid. The valid species follow as: O. verecundum (Jordan and Snyder, 1902), O. incisum (Gilbert, 1905), O. natalensis (Nelson, 1982), O. karlik Parin, 1985, and O. formosensis Kao and Shen, 1985. They are distributed in subtropical area of Pacific and Indian Ocean. During a survey of the Pacific Ocean Study on the Environment and Interactions between the Deep Ocean and National Seas (POSEIDON) program of the Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute (KORDI), an Osopsaron adult was collected from the eastern Jeju Island, Korea. The specimen was identified as O. formosensis, which have eye with dorsal iris flap, cheek with scales, black pigmentation of dorsal membrane, and elongate dorsal spine. Thus, we describe the specimen as the first record of O. formosensis from Korean waters. ◎ Materials and methods : KORDI P08006A3-10, 42.0 ㎜ total length, cleared and bleached, 33.08° N, 127.30° E (Jeju Island, Korea), 121 m depth, 4 June 2008, box corer, R/V Onnuri-ho (KORDI). Counts and measurements follow those of Kao and Shen (1985). ◎ Results & Discussion : Dorsal fin rays Ⅴ, 21; anal fin rays 25; pectoral fin rays 18; pelvic fin rays Ⅰ, 5 ; caudal fin rays 14. Body rather elongated. Head depressed anteriorly. Eye large with dorsal iris flap, interorbital space narrow. Mouth large, the upper jaw little longer than the lower jaw. First dorsal fin comprising five spines, the first three spines very elongate. All fin except dorsal fin some branched rays. Lateral line tube scales above 33+ along the midside of body and weakly serrated. Other scales in the lower margin of eye, in cheek and in the dorsal and ventral sides. Body greyish yellow. Two bright yellow stripes on lateral side of body when fresh. Pigmentation of the first dorsal fin membrane jet black, yellow in the base of the fin
