Abstract
- Biodiversity database systems that include DNA barcodes are relevant to resource conservation and management. The Philippines hosts a threatened high diversity of reef fishes that may be best protected from threats and extinction through the marine protected area framework. However, most species identification of reef fishes are based mainly on gross morphology leaving the important molecular aspect wanting. This study was aimed to DNA barcode teleost fishes from Philippine protected coral reef areas as input to a biodiversity database accessible from the website of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) under the initiative entitled Enhancethe Capacity for Species Identification and Genetic Analysis on Marine Organisms in the Coral Reef. A total of 96 COI barcodes were generated from 82 morphologically identified teleost fish species representing 36 families. Barcodes generated for 26 species were new records on the basis of absence of reference sequences in GenBank. The output of the study will be a contribution to future evolutionary studies of coral reef fish.
