Abstract
Climate change is the one of the hottest issues in the 21st century not only for scientists and policy makers, but also for people worldwide. Advanced countries in ocean sciences had invested a lot to figure out the role of the western Pacific and the eastern Indian Ocean in global climate change for more than a half century. Korea started paying attention to the northwestern Pacific beyond the marginal seas around Korea just for a recent decade. The purpose of the POSEIDON project is to quantitatively evaluate the influence of the climatic change by examining correlation between selected oceanic variabilities in the tropical western Pacific and in the East China Sea, and by configuring the impact of the atmospheric and oceanic change in the northwestern Pacific upon the environments in the East China Sea and in the Korea Strait. During the first (2006-2008) and second (2009-2011) stages, the primary focus of the project is to examine inter-annual variability in atmospheric and oceanic circulations and any corresponding ecosystem change. During the third (2012-2015) stage, in order to quantify the amount of the oceanic impact in the marginal seas due to the environmental changes in the western Pacific, it will be forecasted with the best scenario by modelling future climate and circulation as well as future ecosystem, based upon direct physical and biogeochemical measurements during thPacific and the eastern Indian Ocean in global climate change for more than a half century.
