Abstract
A series of hydrographic microstructure measurements is carried out in the northern East China Sea in August 2005. The data set shows details of hydrographic microstructure and the vertical structure of turbulent energy dissipation rate for the first time in the region. The vertical profiles of represent wide range from 10-10 to close to10-7 W/kg. Its larger values generally appear in the depth range of lower thermocline and in the near-bottom layer indicating the influence of internal waves and tidal stirring, respectively. The velocity data measured from a moored ADCP and time series of temperature obtained from the moored thermistor chains reveal a couple of sharp variations corresponding to the solitary internal wave. The existence of internal solitary waves is consistent with the recent observations from Synthetic Aperture Radar images in the Yellow Sea close to our observation area (Warn-Varbas et al. 2005).Comparing with wind and sea level data recorded at the IEODO Ocean Research Platform, it is suggested that its generation mechanism is related more to the internal tide than strong wind events. Preliminary results of analysis of the vertical distribution of and vertical eddy diffusivity will be presented.
