dc.description.abstract The eastern Yellow Sea is predominantly governed by the monsoonal climate that isresponsible for harsh winter with high waves and wind-generated currentssuperimposed on tidal currents and mild summer with tidal currents only. Geologicalinvestigations conducted over a vast area offshore a giant dyke, Saemangeum, indicate that sands prominently moved southward by about 3 km during a shortperiod of 3 years since the dyke construction. This resulted from combined effects of the dyke construction and monsoonal seasonality. The emplacement of the dyke with its alignment of NE-SW has forced the major axis of tidal currents offshore to rotate about 40o -
