Abstract
Two decades ago, Korea was one of the top ten countries in terms of fisheries production and its export. However Korean fisheries has been stagnated since 1980’s as results of overexploitation and environmental deterioration of coastal fishing grounds in addition to the loss of far sea fishing grounds due to proclaims of EEZ. On the other hand, demand of fisheries product in Korea has increased dramatically and Korea has become the biggest fisheries consumer in the world since 2001. Recently Korea consumes 70kg of fisheries product per capita. As a result Korea has become an importer from the world ranking exporter since 1990’s. Aquaculture seems to be a good solution to solve this problem, however, Korea does not have enough space to meet its demand through aquaculture. Thus the only solution is marine ranching. The concept of restocking marine resources has developed toward the idea of marine ranching which adopted new technology to manage the coastal fisheries resource in environment-friendly and ecologically sound way. To encourage a sustainable yield, to keep a sound marine environment and to provide a better living condition to fishermen, it has been recommended that renovation of infrastructure of Korean fishery should be completed by a self initiative way of fishermen. To establish sound fishing villages in term of economy, the national supporting power should be concentrated on selected fisheries items which are selected by competition. Development and propagation of a successive fishing village model, and promote the present fist industry level of fisheries to the second and the third industries will be the major task for the next decade.
