Marine Resources Research Division
해양자원연구본부The Marine Resources Research Division carries out research activities to secure biological and mineral resources and explores extreme ocean environments for new potential resources. The exploration of deep seabed minerals and new metal and biological resources is carried out to secure a long-term supply of metallicand biological resources and to expand the economic territory. The research on marine biology and bio-technologies will lead to the discovery and utilization of these marine biological resources and new materials through understanding the life-histories of marine organisms.
해양자원연구본부는 해양 생물자원 및 광물자원의 확보와 활용기술을 개발하고 신자원 발굴을 위한 대양 및 극한지 탐사를 추진하는 데 주도적 역할을 수행하고 있다. 전략금속자원을 장기적으로 확보하고 해양경제영토를 확장하기 위해 심해저에 분포하는 광물자원 탐사를 수행하고, 대양의 잠재 금속자원 및 신생물자원을 발굴, 그 생성 과정과 활용가능성을 확인하는 연구를 추진한다. 해양환경의 급격한 변화에 적합한 해양생물자원을 발굴하고 이용성을 극대화하는 기술을 개발하고 있으며 나아가 해양·극한생물의 생명현상 이해를 통한 생명공학 원천기술 및 해양생물 유래 신소재를 개발하는 데 힘쓰고 있다.
