dc.description.abstract | Evolution and fate of aerosols in East Asia are determined by various complicateddynamic aerosol processes including emissions, gas-aerosol interactions, transport anddry/wet deposition. We investigated seasonal variations and sources of trace metals (Al,Fe, nss-K, nss-Ca, nss-Mg, nss-S, As, Cd, Co, Cu, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sn, Sr, Ti, V andZn) in the aerosol samples (n=334) collected during the period October 2003-October 2008at Ulleung Island in the southern East Sea. High Al concentrations were found in spring(geometric mean of 1.23 and 1.28 μg m-3 in March and April, respectively) due to YellowSand, which originated from the northeastern China and resulted in change of chemicalcomposition, showing high positive correlation between Al and V, Mn, nss-K, Sr, Ni(r>0.85), while low positive correlation between Al and anthropogenic As, Zn, Pb, Cd,nss-S (0.2<r<0.4). In the rainy period (June-September), aerosol metal concentrationsseemed to be largely influenced by wet deposition and summer monsoon, together withanthropogenic particle transport. The correlation coefficients in the summer period (July andAugust) showed somewhat strong positive correlation of Al with nss-K (r=0.74) and As(r=0.63), indicating that fine-sized Al is probably originated from the coal burning. Mostmetals (e.g., As, Mn, Mo, Li, Ni, Pb, Sn, Sr, V and Zn) in autumn soil-originatedproportion relatively increased as compared with the winter when anthropogenic particleswere predominated due to probably heating fuel. Consequently, based on the soil andanthropogenic-originated metals, annual chemical composition of aerosols at Ulleung islandcan be characterized by the seasonality: soil-dominated with Yellow Sand events in spring→anthropogenic-dominated with high precipitation and summer monsoon in summer→mixedsources-dominated with northeasterly monsoon in autumn and winter. | - |
