Abstract
- On 7 December 2007, an oil tanker ‘Hebei Spirit’ was crashed by a crane at about 10Km off from the Tea-an shoreline, western coastal Yellow Sea of the Korean side. Intertidal meiobenthic communities are the most exposed ecosystem to damages caused by oil spills. Generally, results of investigations on oil-spill effects on meiobenthos are incompatible. The effects of oil spill seemed to be dependent on scale of spilled oil and habitat characteristics. This monitoring study dealt with the effects of the oil pollution on intertidal meiobenthic community. For the detection of pollution-induced disturbances, monitoring of the meiofaunal assemblages were carried out for past three years which immediately started right after oil contamination of the study area.
