dc.description.abstract Moored current measurements were made over steep bottom at two stations (K1, K2) in the Usan Trough for one year and at one station (U1) in the eastern Ulleung Interplain Gap for two years, where the regions serve as passageways for the exchange of deep waters between the Ulleung and the Japan Basins in the southwestern East/Japan Sea. The data of deep currents show i) near bottom intensification, ii) fluctuations with various periods of O(10 days), and iii) non-equivalent barotropic vertical structure. The near bottom current at K2 flows in the direction parallel to the bottom topography with the speed larger than 20 cm/sec almost the year round. The deep current at U1 is also strong throughout two years supporting the existence of the Dokdo Abyssal Current. The spectral peaks of deep currents are found near 15, 30, 60 days and near 10, 20, and 60 days at K2 and U1, respectively. -
