Abstract
This paper analyzes, based on empirical evidence, the influence of school ties on the results of the national research development program peer review in Korea. This research looks at the evaluation results of about 100,000 research proposals submitted between 2006 and 2012 to the ‘General Researcher Grant Initiative’ supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF). Each proposal was assessed by 3-5 reviewers, with approximately 17% assessed by an alumnus/alumna. From different angles, this paper empirically analyzes how school ties affected the evaluation results. This study was made possible by the personal information of researchers – evaluator and evaluatee – and the accurate empirical data of the review results held in the NRF. This research carried out empirical analysis using the NRF’s empirical data.als submitted between 2006 and 2012 to the ‘General Researcher Grant Initiative’ supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF).
