Abstract
- To date, microalgae (including cyanobacteria) hold promise as producers of sustainable bioresources for biofuels and other bio-products. Spirulina (≈ Arthrospira) has been thoroughly investigated as a food or feed supplements due to its high protein contents. And recently, this cyanobacterium is also focused as a candidate for microalgal feedstock to produce bioethanol due to its high productivity and easiness to culture. However, the problem that still needs to be overcome in bioenthaol production using Spirulina is to reduce the relatively-high production costs compare to other land plants. For this reason, there is need to develop alternative nutrient sources or nutrient supplements for Spirulina culture to reduce initial costs. Therefore, we developed an alternative nutrient source (extract designated ME-1) that can replace Zarrouks medium components in order to reduce the initial cost. In this study, we evaluated the potential of extract ME-1 as an alternative nutrient source for the cultivation of S. maxima Cy-23 in order to enhance its growth in Zarrouks medium (ZM) which is currently used for the culture of this cyanobacterium. The experimental groups were designed by using 3 different concentrations of extract ME-1 diluted with distilled water (DW). Detailed concentration of the experimental groups were as follows group I, 1: 0: 1 (v / v / v) group II, 4: 3: 1 (v / v / v) group III, 16: 15: 1 (ts high protein contents.
