dc.description.abstract Marine microbes, particularly fungi, have been utilized as a new source of novel bioactive secondary metabolites. Marine sponge-associated fungi are receiving increasing attention due to their biotechnological potential. They often live in sponges and their bioactive metabolites may be interpreted as chemical mediated defense mechanisms for protecting their host organism from environmental dangers such as predation. A Penicillium sp. strain 108YDC020 was isolated from an unidentified sponge collected at Wangdolcho, East sea, Korea to search for new natural products with biological activities and novel chemical structures. A new compound was obtained from the EtOAc extract of the culture broth of the strain by C-18 ODS open column and preparative and analytical HPLCs. The structure of this compound was determined by MS, 1D and 2D NMR spectral data analysis.in sponges and their bioactive metabolites may be interpreted as chemical mediated defense mechanisms for protecting their host organism from environmental dangers such as predation.
