Abstract
Much development in methodology has been made and various applications have been proposed, some of which are operational for the measurements of oceanic and related phenomena, including ocean waves, internal waves, oil slicks, and ship detection. SAR acquires information through the radar backscatter from the sea surface and above, and as such, it cannot provide such data as chlorophyll and those in underwater phenomena. However, SAR has a day-and-night imaging capability, and an ability of penetrating cloud cover and, to some extent, rain. Further, underwater information can be inferred from the changes of surface roughness and hence by SAR. Thus, combining with optical data and utilizing ocean hydrodynamics, SAR data can be an invaluable source of information for the understanding of the ocean. In this paper, a short review and the current status of ocean remote sensing by spaceborne SARs are presented with selected topics.ction.
