Abstract
The formation of authigenic carbonate and its burial in marine sediments accounts for around 80% of the total carbon removed from the Earth’s surface. Biologically, authigenic carbonate (from the bicarbonate ion, HCO3-) is mainly produced through organic matter oxidation, such as sulfate reduction and anaerobic methane oxidation (AOM). This study to access the microbial diversity associated with formation of authigenic carbonate, we compared to microbial community between carbonate bearing and marine surface sediments without carbonate using quantitative PCR (Q-PCR) toward microbial 16S rRNA gene and using 16S rRNA gene tag pyrosequencing. The abundance of archaeal and bacterial 16S rRNA gene copies in carbonate bearing sediment were 4.0 and 11.3 times higher than surface sediment without carbonate, respectively. It is consistent with the hypothesis that the carbonate precipitation may require with microbial respiration with large cell number. Furthermore, ANME-1 (1.75×107±6.80×105 copies/gwet) and ANME-2c (1.08×107±1.94×105 copies/gwet) was only detected in carbonate bearing sediment. Based on the partial sequences of 16S rRNA gene revealed that predominant class was not different between two sediments, which were gamma- and sulfate reducing deltaproteobacteria. However, ANMEs were only identified in carbonate bearing sediment, accounting for half of the archaeal proportion with following order: ANME-1 (25.0%through organic matter oxidation, such as sulfate reduction and anaerobic methane oxidation (AOM).
