Abstract

On 28 December 1998, a letter was sent to the state government of Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia, informing the final decision made by the Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute(KORDI) to establish the Korea.South Pacific Ocean Research Center(KSORC) in the chuuk State. The great potentiality of the state and sincere willingness for the Ceter from the government fo chuuk were the foundation for establishing the Center in Chuuk. Through bilateral MOU between Chuuk State and KORDI, the Korea.South Pacific Ocean Research Center is expected to take a position as the gateway for promoting ocean researches and related marine industries for properity and welfare of South Pacific nationsas well as Korea by studying the potentiality of marine resources and its ecosystem of the region. The success of the KSORC will further the success of the Federated States of Micronesia and greater South Pacific Region. We all hope that the Center will become the basis for fostering and encouraging bi/multilateral exchanges of economical, cultural and scientific experiences and knowledge for solid and mutually benefitting relationship as well as the motivational hub for a closer cooperation between Korea and South Pacific regions. Thus, on the day of May 30th, 2000, we gathered at the twon of Sapuk, Weno Island, Chuuk/FSM to witness the first step of our common pursuit in ocean scientific venture by opening the KSORC. W#ith high hope and common visions, we look forward to the future as we begin our journey into brighter future together. We have overcome many obstacles, and much more difficulties may lie ahead but perseverance and hard work will surely bear the abundant fruits for all of us to prize and cherish. It is the specific intent of the Center to pursue the establishement of the cooperative efforts to explore and advance ocean science and technology.
