Abstract
Deep sea water, found 200 meters below the sea level, has the unique characteristics of low temperature, abundant minerals, and high purity. Such characteristics allow a wide range of industrial and commercial utilization, including drinking water, food preparation, aquaculture, medicine, and energy.
Japan currently utilizes deep sea water for a number of commercial purposes, including in beverages and energy production. Taiwan government has successfully integrated both public and private investment, and has facilitated these efforts by enacting relevant policy. The U.S., led by a large scale industry & research laboratory, NALHA, located in Hawaii, has initiated research & development projects in the areas of aquaculture, drinking water, and various value-added multipurpose use of deep sea water.
This study reviewed the international deep sea water resource development projects along with related government policies. Based on the underlying framework of the projects it further investigates deep sea water resource usage and industrial conditions in Korea.
The authors provided a set of guidelines for efficient management and utilization of deep sea water resources
