Abstract
This study investigated the large-scale teleconnection patterns inf luencing extreme wildfire events in Southeastern Siberia region during spring. Wildfires occurred from February to April. We defined extreme wildfire years as those with a burned fraction exceeding the average. Correlation analysis results indicated that the geopotential height and temperature in February and March influence the burned fraction in April. The years with extreme wildfires showed high-pressure, positive temperature and negative relative humidity anomalies in Southeastern Siberia region from February. During this period, the increase in solar radiation absorbed by the surface and the sensible heat released contributed to the rise in atmospheric temperature, resulting in a decrease in relative humidity.
The high-pressure anomalies that occurred in southeastern Siberia during spring were closely related to the negative phase of the West Pacific (WP) pattern. When both negative WP and positive Arctic Oscillation (AO) occurred strongly, there were pronounced and strong high-pressure and positive temperature anomalies in Southeastern Siberia region. As a result, the dry environment conducive to wildfires is formed due to the occurrence of negative WP and positive AO in February and March.
