Abstract
- Thegrowingthreatofantibioticresistancehasspurredanurgentneedforthediscoveryofnovelantimicrobialagents.Manyinfectiousdiseasesarebecomingmoredifficulttotreatduetotheemergenceofantibiotic-resistantbacteria.However,marineenvironmentsharbordiverseanduniquemicrobialcommunities,presentingavastuntappedresourcefortheisolationofbioactivecompoundsfromitsmicrobialcommunities.Despitethevastnessoftheoceans,onlyasmallfractionofmarinebacteriahasbeenthoroughlystudiedfortheirantibioticpotential.Manymarinehabitatsremainlargelyunexplored,presentinguntappedresourcesforthediscoveryofnewcompounds.Further,marinebacteriaoftenpossessuniquemetabolicpathwaysandbiosyntheticcapabilitieswhichequipthemwiththeabilitytoproducebioactivecompoundsthatarestructurallydistinctfromthosefoundinterrestrialcounterparts.Thereforethisstudyaimedtoidentifynewantibioticcompoundsfrommarinebacteriabycarefullyscreeningthrough1008marinebacteriafromthebankandadditional48bacteriaisolatedfromthemarineenvironment.Theidentifiedpotentialspeciesholdthepromiseforfurtherdevelopmentastherapeuticagentstoaddressthegrowingchallengeofantibioticresistance.
