Abstract
This project is a socioeconomic, political, and institutional baseline survey of Ecologically Important Areas (EIAs) of the Yellow Sea of Korea. It was developed by the UNDP/GEF Yellow Sea Project and the WWF/KORDI Yellow Sea Ecoregion Support Project, based on a shared thought that the site selection for biodiversity management demonstration would be based on the adequate understanding of the status of potential demonstration sites and should follow appropriate criteria and procedures. The project was carried out in parallel with a scientific baseline survey. This project used a management effectiveness approach, and attempted to assess comprehensive dimensions of the management status of potential demonstration sites. It first identified and reviewed EIAs of the Yellow Sea of Korea, and developed the management assessment criteria of EIAs. After a thorough review with the developed criteria, four potential demonstration sites (candidate sites) for biodiversity management demonstration were selected – Han River Estuary, Southern Ganghwa Tidal-flat, Garolim Bay and Sinan Archipelago. The project team conducted surveys to thesites and assessed the management status and effectiveness of potential demonstration sites. The strengths, weakness, and gaps of management of each site were identified. Potential activities for biodiversity management were suggested, as well as local partners to collaborate.
