The Marine Resources and Environment Research Division carries out research activities in developing technologies for securing and utilizing marine biological and mineral resources and plays a leading role in promoting the ocean with extreme conditions (deep-sea, hydrothermal vents, polar region, etc.) exploration to discover new resources. Exploration of deep-sea mineral resources is being carried out to secure strategic metal resources in the long term and expand marine economic territory. It is also developing technologies to discover marine biological resources suitable for rapid changes in the marine environment and maximize usability. In addition, for the sustainable use of the ocean, research is being conducted to manage and preserve the marine environment by monitoring and evaluating changes in the marine environment caused by natural and human impacts.

해양자원·환경연구본부는 해양 생물 및 광물자원의 확보와 활용기술을 개발하고 신자원 발굴을 위한 대양 및 극한지(심해, 열수분출구 등) 탐사를 추진하는 데 주도적 역할을 하고 있다. 전략금속자원의 장기적 확보와 해양경제영토 확장을 위해 심해저 광물자원 탐사를 수행하고 있다. 또한 급격하게 변화하는 해양환경에 적합한 해양생물자원을 발굴하고 이용성을 극대화하는 기술을 개발하고 있으며 나아가 해양·극한생물의 생명현상 이해를 통한 생명공학 원천기술 및 해양생물 유래 신소재를 개발하는 데 힘쓰고 있다. 그리고 이러한 해양의 지속가능한 이용을 위해 자연적, 인위적 요인에 의한 해양환경 변화를 감시·평가하여 해양환경을 관리·보전하는 연구도 수행하고 있다.
