Abstract
- The occurrence of the family Cylindropsyllidae is herein reported in Korean waters, based on identification of two harpacticoid copepods Stenocaris n. sp. and S. intermedia Itô, 1972 in the East Sea. The new species mostly resembles S. minor (T. Scott, 1892) in that it shares the significant characteristics of a seven-segmented female antennule, segmentation and armature of swimming legs, and the presence of setiform second innermost seta on the female P5. However, this species differs from the latter in nature of the female fifth leg, and sexual dimorphic features of the second and third legs in the male. Our S. intermedia specimens generally correspond to the original description of Itô (1972), but a few minor differences were represented in details of elements on the fourth and fifth legs in the female. In addition, intra-population variability in the female P5 in the length-to-width ratio of a single segment and the thickness and length of setae/spines among the geographical populations. We provide detailed descriptions and illustrations of these two Stenocaris species.
