Abstract
Ports are essential infrastructure for today's global economy. However, various anthropogenic stresses of ports could have adverse effects on the surrounding air quality. The port activities such as ship emissions, transportation, biomass-burning, and in-port emissions have been identified as major sources of PM2.5 emissions. PM2.5, with its various associated pollutants, is considered a severe atmospheric problem because it readily penetrates the human respiratory tract and can adversely affect health. The port of Busan is located in Busan largest port city in Korea, with a population of 34290000. It is reported that ambient PM2.5 in this area often exceeds 15 ㎍/m3 , the Korean air quality standard. In addition to long-range transport, the contribution of the amount of PM2.5 generated within the port might be significant, so the characterization and the risk quantification of PM2.5 from port areas are important to establish the strategy for improving local air quality. Therefore, in this study, the PM2.5 monitoring campaign was performed four times a year in 2021 in Busan Port, and the distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in PM2.5 and human health risk assessment related to inhalation were carried out.
