Abstract
Artificial structures such as seaweeds and timber fence were designed as the pilot structures to increase the activation of creation and restoration of tidal flat. However, little is known about that whether the artificial construction is affected to the macrobenthic community structure. To address this, we studied the influences of artificial structures (seaweeds and timber fence) on macrobenthic community structure at the experimental sites for the construction of the artificial tidal flats in front of Iwon dike, Korea. To assess the influence we compared the macrobenthic community structure between the artificial sites and natural sites within one month, 5 months and 9 months after the artificial structure. In total, 100 macrobenthic species were recorded during this study, with crustaceans (38%), polychaetes (26%), gastropods (17%) and bivalves (13%) richest in species. Density of polychaetes was comprised more than 48% of the total density, followed by gastropods (33%) and crustaceans (17%). Macrobenthic species composition was similar to that of the artificial and natural sites being several common dominant species beginning the experiment, but differed after 5 months. Umbonium thomasi, the most dominant species, appeared in the both sites within one month after experiment, but disappeared in the artificial sites after 5 months, suggesting the disturbance of the environmental variance. The number of species and diversity (H') vary significantly within regions in the beginning experiment, but no difference after 5 and 9 months in experiment. There were no differences in density and species compositions between in the artificial seaweeds and timber fence and in front and back of the two artificial constructions, suggesting no effect in the two kinds of artificial type on the macrobenthic community.
