Abstract
A single juvenile of a rare jawfish, Stalix toyoshio (24.0 mm SL) was collected from a depth of 135 m in the South Sea of Korea by a box corer during a survey POSEIDON (Pacific Ocean Study on Environment and Interactions between Deep Ocean and National seas) by the RV Onnuri-ho (Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute, KORDI). Counts and measurements follow those of Smith-Vaniz and Yoshino (1985) and Smith-Vaniz (1997). The specimen examined are deposited in the Ichthyology Laboratory of KORDI. The specimen is characterized by having no stripes on body and vertical fins, well developed cephalic pore system, yellowish speckles on head, dorsal-fin spines transversely forked and mandibular pores separated. We described the species both as the first record from Korea and as the second record from the world.
