Abstract
- Coral reefs harbor abundance fish and echinoderms species which both marine animals are large conspicuous group on the reefs. Many of the animals are hard to identify without either specialized training or taxonomists. DNA-based identification systems will provide a powerful tool for enhanced understanding of the natural history and ecological interactions of various animal species. DNA barcoding offers a simple, quick and cheap way to identify not only whole body, but also fragments, eggs and larvae, supporting sustainable fisheries and increasing consumer confidence. In this study, we demonstrate that sequences diversity in the mitochondrial gene coding for cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene (cox1) is highly effective in discriminating 35 species of fish and echinoderms species collected from Chuuk. Our results establish the potential of COI as a rapid and accurate identification tool for biodiversity surveys of most tropical dominant species fish and echinoderms.
