Abstract
The complete mitochondrial genome of the Korean skate (Hongeo koreana), the sole member of its genus is investigated for the first time in this study. The genome consists of 16,905 bp in length with 2 rRNA, 22 tRNA and 13 protein coding genes as shown in other Rajidae species. The gene configuration and lengths are similar to those of other elasmobranch fish. The genome is composed of 29.8% A, 27.8% C, 28.0% T, and 14.4% G, showing high A+T (57.8%) bias. An anti-G bias (5.99%) is more significant in the third codon position. Twelve of the 13 mitochondrial protein-coding genes use ATG as their start codon while the COX1 gene starts with GTG. As for stop codon ND3 and ND4 genes have incomplete stop codon T, while the COX2 gene uses AGA. The control region spans 1,248 bp in length. The origin of replication for the L-strand comprises 37 nucleotide highly conserved among the Rajidae species, being located in the cluster of five tRNA genes (WANCY). The mitogenome of H. koreana will enrich the genomic information of the family Rajidae and spur to clarify the genetic relationship and the evolution of mtDNA in the family. genes as shown in other Rajidae species.
