Abstract
A virtual ocean environment system has been developed by Korea Ocean R&D Institute and associates as part of Dual-Use program sponsored by MOST Korea. The virtual ocean environment system visualizes the marine environmental parameters in 5 dimensions (3 in space, time, variable on variable plane) as the operator navigates, walks or flies at any water depth in the ocean. The system consists of a module that produces the ocean environmental data, image visualization module and a module for immersive virtual reality system. Integrating and interfacing three modules into the Digital Ocean & Virtual Environment (DOVE) system are the key effort of development. The ocean and atmospheric data for VR visualization is fusion data of model simulation, climatological database, remote sensing, fixed and/or floating buoy, etc. By building the immersive VR environment using big display devices such as VR Table and a 4-wall K-CAVE manufactured by a Korean company to display the time-varying 3-dimensional ocean environment. The other VR visualization is conducted on the Internet to show the web 3D of the oceanic environment using the Internet modeling language, the VRML. Numerical simulation of three dimensional time-varying ocean processes using ROMS and/or POM have been examined for exploration of seasonal circulation and water mass structure in the Yellow Sea an the East Sea . This presentation demonstrates the applicability of VR technique to analyze the huge amount of high resolution data.
