Abstract
Diadromous fish migrate between the sea and the river at least twice in thier life. during this migration the fish experience the physiology stress due to salinity changes. the diadromous fish have known to delay their upstream movement at or near the freshwater boundary of the estuary while they adapt their osmoregulatory physiology. However, fish often ener freshwater directly from seawater through fish ladders or channels in the estuarine dams. This behaviour of fish raises a conundrum to an observer. How do they overcome without physiological stress caused by abrupt salinity change ? Here, we use a new technique to show how glass eels entered directly from seawater into freshwater. We found the physiological stress by abrupt salinity change was nearly disregarded and relieved by a variation in water temperature that mimics natural conditions.
