Abstract
The purpose of this study was to understand the spatial distribution of blacklip pearl oyster in Chuuk Lagoon, Federated States of Micronesia. Twenty six stations were selected along the coast of major islands and a series of underwater observations was done at each station by scuba divers. Based on the multi-dimensional scaling, bottom habitats of the study area were classified into four habitats such as Porite lutea dominated, dead coral bed, Porite nigrescens dominated and coralline sand bottom area. The spatial distribution of the oyster seemed to be closely related to habitat types, however no difference in shell size was observed among habitats. The overall means (n=237) of shell length and total weight of the oyster were 124 mm and 286.4 gWWt, respectively. The mean density of the oyster was 33 inds./ha and the stock size of the oyster which can be directly put to pearling industry was estimated to 364,800 individuals.
