dc.description.abstract In order to understand geochemical characteristics in tidal flat sediments of ongoing reclamation project, 57 surface sediment samples were collected from the Saemangeum tidal flat of the Korean west coast. Geochemical parameters (Mz, COD, IL, TC, TOC, TN, S, P, Al, Fe, Mn, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) of the samples were analyzed. The contents of these parameters vary with wide range. The highest values for organic matter (COD, IL, TC, TOC and TN) were found in Line-Um of the Dongjin river estuary, the upper tidal flat of Line-Sd in the Mangyeong river estuary, and Line-Sa. However, the low values of these were observed in Lines-Ge, Gy and Dh. The high contents for all of the metals were observed in all sites of Line-Sa and in the upper tidal flats of Lines-Um and Sd like the distributions of organic matters. The lowest contents of metals were found in Line-Dh and/or in the lower tidal flats of Lines-GE and GY. The contents of Co, Cr, Cu and Zn show strong positive correlations (r=0.723 – 0.800) with mean grain size. The metal/Al ratios of Line-Sa for all metals except for Pb are generally higher than those of other lines. The greatest controlling factor of geochemical composition in surface sediments of this study area would be a grain size. -
