dc.description.abstract Although it is now understood the basic behavior of the Changjiang diluted water (CDW), detailed description of the CDW is still far from complete. In order to investigate the behavior of the CDW, Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute conducted hydrographic survey in the northern East China Sea in July 2004. Seven satellite-tracked drifters (with 5 or 15 m of drogue depth) were deployed during the survey period jointly with Cheju National University, Pusan National University and Kyushu University. Comparing with the wind data based on the measurement the IEODO marine research station, R/V Eardo and by the QuikSCAT, it is clearly shown that the movement of drifters follows the wind driven dynamics. This supports the recent reports for the CDW movement based on the numerical studies (Chang and Isobe 2003; Pang et al., 2004). The upper drifters on the sea surface were generally moving to 30-50° right of the wind direction. This consists with the observations by Lee et al. (2003). The moving directions of the deeper drifters (15 m drogue depth) turn a few tens degree right of the direction of the surface flows. -
