Abstract
Recently, a lot of attention has been paid to the reliability analysis of coastal structures. This may be due to the frequent occurrence of natural disasters or to the trends for performance based design that will be or already has been reflected in design codes of many countries. Although there are increasing demands in the reliability assessment of coastal structures, there are still lots of problems to be uncovered. One of those issues is the effect of seismic earth pressure on the caisson type quay walls. The seismic earth pressure is in nature a dynamic load. But, in practice, it is treated as equivalent static one. In dealing with the load in reliability evaluation of caisson type quay wall, the phase difference between earth pressure and inertial force of caisson is often neglected. When the effect is not considered in reliability assessment, the result, of course, has considerable error. Therefore, the phase difference effect should be appropriately included in the analysis. Recently, Nagao et al(2001) tried to find the failure probabilities of caisson type quay walls by using a parameter representing phase difference. They showed that the probability of failures is affected by the parameter to a great extent and hence it should be considered in the analysis
