Abstract
The deep water warming and the depletion of oxygen in the deep layer are considered as recent prominent trend in the East Sea in terms of the climate change. The reason for this change is believed mostly due to the slow down of deep convection. In this study, we have investigated the role of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) on this matter, which is the unique source of heat and salt from the lateral boundary. The annual average transports of TWC estimated from several observations show rather wide range varying 1.3 ~ 4.5 Sv with comparable seasonal variation. Thus, in this experiment, we compared three solutions computed with varying the annual mean TWC transport (3.9Sv, 2.6Sv, 1.3Sv, respectively). The model used in this study is the RIAMOM developed at Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, Kyushu University, Japan.Though the TWC is confined to upper 200m, the transport change affects on the intermediate layers and even deeper part. Vertical section of zonally averaged temperature show that TWC3.9 plays a role to increases the deep temperature while TWC1.3 works conversely. Influence on the zonally averaged salinity distribution is rather different from that of temperature. Though the upper layer shows similar tendency to the change of temperature, salinity increasing is more prominent in TWC1.3 case than TWC3.9. Most significant changes are shown in the Mixed Layer Depth (MLD) in February. TWC3.9 and TWC1.3 produce much shallower and deeper MLD compared to that of Control (TWC2.6) case, respectively. The change of meridional overturning strength and that of MLD suggests that the local convection can be affected by the lateral heat/salt transport of TWC as well as surface flux.
