Abstract
Concentrations of 90 individual PCB congeners were measured in sediment and biota collected from a semi-enclosed bay, Masan Bay. Total PCB concentrations in sediments were in the range of 0.63 – 58.0 ng/g (dry weight). Their distribution was related with anthropogenic activities in the bay such as urban, industry and municipal waste water outlet. 24% of the sites showed PCB levels higher than the effect-range low concentration (22.7 ng/g) suggested by Long et al. (1995), however all of them was below the effect-range medium concentration (180 ng/g). The enantiomeric compositions of chiral PCBs were also measured by using gas chromatography with mass spectrometry and electron capture detector. Two commercially available chiral capillary columns, Chirasil-Dex and Cyclosil-B, were used for separation of enantiomers of the 18 stable chiral PCBs. Nonracemic ERs for PCBs 132, 136, and 149 were found, indicating that PCB transformation processes are enantioselective.
