Abstract
Oil tanker 11 Heungkuk spilled diesel oil in the west coast of Korea in 25th August, 2002. The oil was supposed to be drifted into the fish mariculture farm. Oil samples had been collected and stored by the regional NMPA (National Maritime Police Agency). For the spill identification, tiered approach was used. In the level 1, alkane fraction was determined and chromatograms of spilled oils were compared with suspected sources. At the level 2, biomarker and PAHs patterns were checked whether differences were caused by weathering or sample inhomogeneity. Finally, the matching of diagnostic ratios were evaluated. Suspected source group that were sampled in and around the ship had almost same chromatogram profile and diagnostic ratios with each other. Among spilled oil groups that were sampled around mariculture farm only two samples showed similar chromatogram patterns with suspected sources. So we proceeded and focused further step on the comparison of suspected sources and two samples of spilled oil group. Most notable and unexpected results were found at the selected ion 226 where four independent, distinct peaks appeared irrespective of samples. These peaks were characteristics of low sulfur diesel oil which were distilled in the refineries of Korea. Results of selected biomarker ratios also supported the results of alkylated dibenzothiophene. Our final conclusion based on the available data was probable match.
