Abstract
Ocean deep convection plays a critical role in thermohaline circulation and climate, but its proper parameterization in the OGCM still remains to be one of the most difficult problem. The widely used schemes such as convective adjustment and a large vertical eddy diffusivity, which often cause serious defects in the OGCM, do not take into consideration of the effects of baroclinicity and rotation, although it has been known that deep convection can be affected seriously by these effects. Using LES (large eddy simulation), we investigated how the generation of baroclinic eddies and rotation affect the vertical mixing process by ocean deep convection. Besides the comparison was made between the results from the vertical mixing schemes of deep convection and those from LES.
