dc.description.abstract The data obtained form a moored Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler and thermistor chains in the northern East China Sea in August 2005 reveal rich high frequency vertical perturbations for almost entire water column and give a clear evidence of the existence of internal waves. The largest amplitude generally appears in the lower thermocline with about 10 m downward displacement in a solitary wave packet. Turbulent energy dissipation in the pycnocline exceeds 10-7 W/kg implying direct effect of internal waves on the generation of turbulence. Sea level data recorded at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station indicate that solitary internal waves occur during the ebb tidal phase. On the other hand, no significant correlation between strong wind events and the internal waves is found. -
