Abstract
We explore the characteristics of the North Pacific dipole-like sea surface temperature (SST) variability along with its climate impact using both observations and a coupled atmosphere-ocean model. A dipole-like SST variability exhibits a seesaw SST variation between the northern and southern North Pacific and is independent of El Nino and Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The variability of a dipole-like SST is dominated on decadal timescales and largely due to coupled ocean-atmosphere interaction over the North Pacific. Using the composite analysis based on the principal component climate impacts of the dipole-like SST variability during boreal summer and winter are investigated. It is found that the dipole-like SST variability may influence global climate in the North Pacific, North America and North Atlantic through potential atmospheric teleconnections with seasonal dependency.
