Abstract
In the present study, we carried out biochemical and physiological experiments on a native fish, Marbled sole from spring 2004 to 2005 to assess the toxic response simultaneously caught in two sites of the south sea in Korea. We measured the Cholinesterase (ChE), hepatic ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity and CYP1A expression in marbled sole from an industrial harbour, the inner reaches of Masan Bay with that in sole from a reference site, Haegeumgang, in Geoje Island. We also describe seasonal variation (or its absence) in EROD, ChE activity and CYP1A expression from the reference site. Generalized linear model (GLM) were analyze the dependence of the enzyme activity on sampling area and as well as biological parameters of the fish. Statistically significant differences in the activities of measured biomarkers were observed between reference site and contaminated sites. The results of this study suggest that the Masan Bay have significant impact on enzyme activity of native fish. Therefore, the use of these Generalized linear model (GLM), each responding to different contaminants, provides a more comprehensive picture of the effects of contamination in Masan Bay.
