Abstract
An integrated oceanographic database system was established for providing environmental information of military operation areas. Not only almost oceanographic data opened to public through the internet but also private data kept by Korean Navy were collected for establishment of this DB system. The DB system cover waters surrounding Korean peninsula, the East Sea, the Yellow Sea, the South Sea, the East China Sea and north western part of Pacific Ocean. The limit of latitude and longitude are 20°-50°N and 115°-145°E, respectively. Oracle database installed on Unix operating system was selected as database management system and geographic information system(GIS) was selected as middleware. Database users can search data of DB system using the internet browsers with web GIS interface. To set up GIS, geographic information like coast lines, depths, etc, are collected from numerical hydrographic chart and transformed to ArcGIS shape files. The internet GIS established in this system has an additional function which is dynamic plotting to add the points selected by search function on the GIS maps. Several Active-X controls which have dynamic visualization functions were introduced to produce time series chart, vertical distribution map, horizontal distribution map, and interactive display of seismic sonar data. The system also have several data management functions which support effective management of oceanographic data produced by the Korea navy.
