dc.description.abstract Saemangeum tideland reclamation project in Korea has been started in November 1991 to construct 33km-long sea dikes, 28,300 ha of land and 11,800 ha of freshwater lake. Now most of the planed construction works for sea dikes and sluice gates were completed. In May 2001, Korean government has proclaimed an environment-friendly development policy as a result of NGO-Government joint investigation and open discussion for two years since 1999. And multidisciplinary survey program on the oceanic environment in the Saemangeum area has been started in early 2002. Physical, chemical, biological and geological oceanographic survey and in situ monitoring were included in the program. The Han River is approximately 497km-long and it is the only major river of which estuary is still maintained its natural geographic features and functions in Korea. The estuary of the Han River was designated as wetlands preservation area in April, 2006. A scientific research project for the development of management and restoration technologies for estuaries was begun in KORDI. Observations and hydrographic and ecological modeling for diagnoses of the estuarine environments are being accomplished. The internet GIS and data management systems for Saemangeum and the Han River estuary are being operated. We established integrated data management systems of each multidisciplinary survey program. Each integrated data management system was designed to present its service through internet web site. Their data service systems were based on metadata management systems. The metadata management systems provide information of observations according to user defined query conditions such as locations and time, etc. And end-users could get the final observation data were linked with the metadata. The results of observations and modeling products were also provided through visualization on Geographic Information System (GIS) for each observation and modeling item.
