Abstract
In this study, applicability of electrical conductivity monitoring technique for containment barrier such soil-bentonite wall. Laboratory tests including permeability tests and column tests were performed to evaluate the variation of electrical conductivity with bentonite content, hydraulic conductivity, and/or heavy metal concentration. The electrical conductivity of compacted soil-bentonite mixtures were linearly increased with bentonite content. In addition, indirect tendency between electrical conductivity and hydraulic conductivity with change in bentonite content was observed. Such correlations may be applicable in indirectly assessing the hydraulic conductivity of soil-bentonite wall. In column tests, electrical conductivity breakthrough curve and concentration breakthrough curve were simultaneously obtained. This results indicated that electrical conductivity measurement can be effective means of detecting heavy metal transport at the desired location of barriers and verifying whether contaminants are leaked before they passed through barriers completely. Experimental results obtained from this study showed that the electrical conductivity measurement can be a promising tool for monitoring of containment barrier.
