Abstract
Identifying the location and distribution of nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) in the subsurface is important to design the aquifer remediation schemes. The partitioning tracer method has been studied as an alternative method for detecting and characterizing the distribution of NAPL in subsurface. The partitioning tracer method is a characterization tool that can be used to quantify the pore space saturation (SN) and spatial distribution of NAPL in the subsurface. In this method, the conservative and partitioning tracer are instantly injected into NAPL-contaminated site. Injected tracers are separated and retarded due to their chromatographic separation with NAPL during their flowing. The average saturation of NAPL within the swept pore volume can be inferred from this chromatographic separation. In this paper, petroleum hydrocarbons such as diesel, kerosene, and jet-fuel are used as NAPL contaminant in subsurface. And the chloride ion and several alcohol tracers are used as a conservative tracer and partitioning tracers, respectively. The partitioning tracer test is performed under 1-D flow condition to simulate the contamination by petroleum hydrocarbons in saturated zone and the average saturation of petroleum hydrocarbon (SP) is calculated by using first moment method. Results from column experiment show that the estimation of SP from using two partitioning tracers is more exact than that from using a set of a conservative and partitioning tracer. Additionally, the special combination of tracers for exact SP estimation is found for each petroleum hydrocarbon.
