Abstract
In winter, warm and saline water west of Cheju Island in the northwestern East China Sea has been suggested to be advected northward by the upwind flow generated in the deep Yellow Sea trough [Park, 1986; Hsueh, 1988]. On the other hand, a tongue-shaped front is strongly established across the Yellow Sea entrance and the warm Cheju Warm Current Water to the south of the front is known to turn clockwise around Cheju Island to flow into the Cheju Strait [Lie et al., 2000; 2001]. The following question may be raised: Is the upwind flow theory still valid in the frontal zone? In this study, we revisit long-term moored current data collected in the past in winter to compare current characteristics in the trough north of the front and in the front.
