Abstract
To explore limiting factors of spring bloom by waste disposal after dumping activity commenced in the Yellow Sea, we used two coupled 1-dimensional model and one ecological model. An one dimensional(1-D) model calculated temperature and vertical diffusivity (Kh) on the 2.5 layers turbulence closure scheme (Mellor and Yamada, 1982) forced only sea surface temperature and the ecological model consisted of five compartments (DIN, DIP, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and detritus) forced by photosynthetically available radiation simplified three dimensional eco-model. We simulated year-to-year variations of plankton and nutrients using two coupled models from 1998 to 2000 and compared results of model with observed data. From model results, the growth factor of spring bloom in dumping area was temperature when it provided accumulated nutrients of bottom layer to weaken stratification in the winter. However, the weakening factor of spring bloom in the study area was caused by a limited supply of nutrients due to strong stratification. Especially, insufficient radiation of March 1999 showed low chlorophyll-a concentration despite sufficient nutrients in surface. Radiation also turned out to be a weakening factor of spring bloom in the study area.
