Abstract
Marine red algae serve as important resources for biologically active natural products. The red algae Rhodomelaceae are known to contain large amounts of bromophenols. These metabolites possess diverse bioactivities properties such as cytotoxic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, α-glucosidase inhibitory, enzyme inhibitory, feeding deterrent and antibacterial activities. In the course of our continuing search for secondary metabolites possessing biological significance from marine organisms, we collected the red alga Odonthalia corymbifera belong to the family of Rhodomelaceae off the coast of Sokcho in April 2006. Guided by antibacterial activity, a new bromophenol together with previously reported compounds were obtained from the methanol extract of the fresh alga of O. corymbifera. The purity of the compounds was confirmed by HPLC. And the structures of the novel compound has been elucidated by combined spectroscopic methods including 2D NMR. And the derivatives of natural bromophenols have been obtained by the catalytic hydrodehalogenation of the bromophenols and brominations of corresponding phenolic compounds. The antibacterial activities of natural bromophenols and synthetic derivatives were compared.
